Layers Project

Final Clock piece
My latest project was titled 'Layers'. From the brief:
You are to creatively explore and review a range of materials, techniques and processes, and evaluate results in terms of inventive outcomes and aesthetic qualities that can be applied to current and future work. You will be expected to keep detailed and sequential records of study including preparatory research materials and samples, experimental techniques and process, test pieces and annotations. You will be made aware of health and safety requirements and be expected to observe safe practice throughout.

I first brainstormed ideas to fit with the layers brief and thought of natural forms and came up with the first idea of doing a Cairn to add to an existing Cairn. When this idea didn't work out I moved onto another idea to use wood as the main material.

Third idea to adjust a wheel of wood but was deemed too similar to a dart board.

Fifth idea. Changed because it wasn't anything like my previous ideas and inspired by an Andy Goldsworthy picture.
The next three pictures are pages from my sketchbook to show my development with my fifth idea.

My final outcome was made up of a cardboard rectangle cut out on the laser cutter and a spread of leaves creeping up the back. The leaves were embossed on the paper via using the rolling mill in the workshop. These were the final results. Over all I'm very happy with my sketchbook and my final piece.

Applied Design Week

View of Preston
Below the cut is all my pictures from the Applied Design taster week. I cut out the empty sections of map pages and suspended them on string. I then took photographs through certain sections and took pictures of the shadows created.
